On June 22, Marufa Khanam and her husband Samaruddin stepped out for cool air as staying inside their thatched house became unbearable due to the hot and humid weather. Khanam says power outages were common like that night.
They went separate ways, as men usually gather near matabari (embankment) — less than 200 metres away where some villagers fish. That was the last time the 30-year-old saw her husband alive.
