A constant rush of civilians, a handful of Afghani shops and restaurants along the busy narrow lanes humming with traffic noise, and street vendors’ loud vocal sales pitches sum up the aura of the Hauz Rani area in India’s capital; New Delhi. At Hauz Rani, as one steps ahead, one after another, witnessing people from Afghanistan on the streets is quite common. Among them, many have already spent long years here in India as “refugees” and “asylum-seeker.”

60-year-old Hedayetullah – an Afghan refugee living in India for the last eight years – has been working as a cook at a restaurant in Hauz Rani said that he is an engineer by profession, but he had to leave war-torn Afghanistan because of what he delineated as “Taliban-led attacks” on the civilians in Afghanistan. Hedayetuallah himself was also attacked.

While maintaining a sharp smile, Hedayetullah asked as to what I wanted to eat. Looking into the menu for a few seconds, all that I ordered was Uzbek Pulao and a few pieces of bread. The conversation continued.
