In the first week of March 2022, reports surfaced about the self-immolation of 25-year-old Tsewang Norbu, a popular Tibetan singer in Lhasa, in protest against the Chinese government. Self-immolation has been a gruesome method of protest against the Chinese administration of Tibet. Since 2009, including the recent case, at least 158 Tibetan monks, nuns, and commoners self-immolated opposing China’s “repression” in Tibet.

The news of Tsewang’s self-immolation triggered an uproar and serious concerns among the Tibetan diaspora, including scores of activists across the world advocating the “Free Tibet” movement.

Around 1,500 kilometers away from Lhasa, many Tibetan “refugees” in Himachal Pradesh are also concerned about the incident, expressing anger. Sloganeering against China’s “communist regime”, they organised a rally in Dharamshala on March 10, marking 63 years of the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule.
